Bill Swan
Executive Director
I took over ECCO's leadership on Palm Sunday, April 1, 2007. I came from a position as Facilities/Maintenance/Accommodations Manager at Camp Oakhurst and prior to I worked as Global Parts Manager for Upright, a vertical access equipment company, where I was responsible for warehouses in Madera, CA, Dublin, Ireland and Teleford, England.
Throughout my work life I was always asking myself, 'is this all there is?' An opportunity came in the form of an ad in the Sierra Star for a maintenance manager at Camp Oakhurst. I applied and accepted an offer for the position. That was over three years ago. It wasn't about money but about serving the Lord. For the first time in a long, long time I felt peace. I was happy. The joy of serving was wonderful. I started praying to see if there was more I could do. Once you get started serving the Lord, you just want to do more. When I saw an ad on CCCA's bulletin board for an Executive Director at ECCO. I applied. The rest is history.
I was born in San Diego to a Navy aviator. My mom was a housewife who kept busy raising two boys and two girls. I attended parochial schools in the San Diego area and graduated from Marian High School in Imperial Beach. I served in the Marine Corps. for two years, rising to the rank of corporal.
Although the Marine Corps. encouraged me to stay, my passion for racing sports cars got the better of me. My whole family has been in racing at one time or another and cousin Dennis Swan was a crew chief for Indianapolis 500 cars. My last involvement in racing took place in 1992 where I won Sports Car Club of America's Solo II National Championship for "D" Prepared cars at Salina, Kansas.
An avid sports fan all my life, I lettered in football, basketball, baseball and track at Marian High School, I've coached girls' softball. I like the game of golf for its competition but also for the beautiful courses and the enjoyment of playing with friends. Bragging rights are a key part of the game.
If you ask me to name the loves of my life, they'd definitely include my wife, Heather, my son, Will--and Juliet. Juliet is our Cessna 150, call sign N2557J(uliet). Both Heather and I are private pilots and share the joy of flying we can.
My management style, although casual and informal, is to delegate, empower and encourage all staff to "be all they can be" while maintaining checks and controls so that I keep my finger on what's going on in all areas.
