Opera at Oakhurst
April 11-15, 2013
Bel canto has been defined as "a style of singing characterized by beauty of tone rather than dramatic power." There can be no doubt that the Italian bel canto opera of the early 19th century represents a huge point of beauty in the history of Western music, but it is also thrilling drama. Bel canto opera not only deepened and humanized opera as a dramatic medium, it represented a crucial stage in the development of opera into a modern art form.
In this weekend, we will explore the bel canto operatic repertoire, considering it as both a major part of the European Romantic movement and a precursor to modern psychological drama. We will discuss some of the most popular operates from the period, such as Il barbiere de Sivlia, Morma, and Lucia dt Lammermoor and we will become acquainted with some its lesser known masterpieces, as, for example Rossini's Otello and Maometto II, Bellini's La straniera, and Donizetti's Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda and Maria di Rohan. We will also consider the way in which the operatic voice developed during the bel canto period and look at the careers of some of the most colorful performers in operatic history.
The bel canto repertoire is quite large. Between them Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti wrote well over 100 operas, only a fraction of which are still performed regularly. Their output and those of other, lesser-known bel canto composers represent a wonderfully rich treasury of unfamiliar opera. This weekend will provide an introduction to some of the most beautiful music ever written for the human voice.

Prayer Summit
September 23-24, 2013
Registration 8:30-9:00
Pastor & Christian Leader, you are invited to a Valley-wide gathering of pastors and ministry leaders in Central California. Since 1992, we have gathered together each year at our Prayer Summit in Oakhurst. Psalm 133 says that it is good when we dwell together in unity and that is where God’s commands His blessing. Pastors’ Prayer Summits have been a great blessing to many and we hope you choose to be blessed this year by attending.
We believe that having pastors praying together is a key component to God’s blessing in a community. God has used Prayer Summits for many years to knit together the fabric of the Christian community in Fresno and Clovis. He is building a network of Christian leaders throughout our Valley.
It is our intent to allow God to guide our time together as we seek Him and wait before Him. We have no agenda in our prayer time other than to worship, pray and to seek God’s direction.
