Opera at Oakhurst
April 12-16, 2012
For many of us opera is, by definition, “grand”. But in the 19th century, “Grand Opera” was a specific style of opera that enjoyed immense popularity and it still does today. Grand Opera is set in exotic and colorful historical eras and geographical locations; it employs the scenery and machinery of the theatre to its maximum potential; it represents the forces of history coming into tragic conflict with heroic and not so heroic individuals; and it employs massive resources, vocal, choral and orchestral.
We will explore the historical reasons for the rise of Grand Opera and its development from the late operas of Rossini (Guillaume Tell), through the major works of Auber (La muette de Portici), Meyerbeer (Les Huguenots and Le prophète) and Halévy (La juive), to the grand operas of Donizetti (Les Martyrs), Wagner (Rienzi and Lohengrin), and Verdi (Jerusalem, Don Carlos and Aida). Through DVD recordings of major productions, we will also see how the contemporary theatre has responded to the challenge offered by the profoundly moving magnificence of Grand Opera.
As we enter our seventeenth year, Opera at Oakhurst is proud to introduce Professor Simon Williams. Professor Williams is Chair of the Department of Dramatic Art at UCSB. He has taught at universities on four continents, including the University of Regina, of Alberta, Cornell University and, since 1984, UC Santa Barbara. He has published widely in the fields of European continental theatre, the history of acting, Shakespearean performance, and operatic history. His major publications include German Actors of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries (Greenwood, 1985), Shakespeare on the German Stage, 1586-1914 (Cambridge, 1990), Richard Wagner and Festival Theatre (Greenwood, 1994), and Richard Wagner and the Romantic Hero (Cambridge, 2004). He has contributed numerous articles in his fields of specialty in edited volumes and leading periodicals. He is also an active director and reviewer of opera. His current projects include co-editing A History of the German Theatre for Cambridge University Press and studies of Shakespeare in the eighteenth century and European opera in the nineteenth. Simon brings to us the excitement of new insights, an appreciation of theater movements that have enlivened his productions at the UC Santa Barbara.
